How to Use MCP

Last updated: July 29, 2026

The Hanover Park MCP server gives AI assistants secure, read-only access to your fund administration data through the Model Context Protocol — an open standard supported by Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, and a growing list of AI clients. Connect once, then ask questions in plain language and get answers grounded in your live Hanover Park data: no spreadsheet exports, no waiting on reports. The AI works from the same firms, funds, investors, portfolio companies, and accounting data you see in the web app, governed by the same permissions.

Authentication & Permissions

👤 Who can connect Firm admins and members. Auditors cannot authorize MCP connections, and neither can LP or partner contacts.

🔐 Authentication OAuth 2.1 with auto-discovery (RFC 8414, RFC 9728). On first connect you're redirected to Hanover Park to sign in and grant access. Access tokens expire after one hour and refresh automatically.

👁 Read-only The server cannot create, update, or delete anything. To make changes, use the Hanover Park web app.

🔄 Same permissions as the web app The MCP server enforces identical authorization: the same firm membership checks, fund role requirements, and row-level data filtering. There is no separate auth path and no elevated privilege.

Live permission checks Permissions are re-validated on every request. If your role changes or your account is deactivated, access updates immediately, even mid-session.

Rate limit 100 requests per minute per user.

What the AI can access

The server exposes 12 read-only tools. You never pick a tool — the AI selects them from your question. It always starts by checking which firms and funds you can access, then scopes every answer to your permissions.

Area

What you can ask

Firms & funds

Which firms, funds, SPVs, GP entities, and management companies do I have access to? Also returns your firm's tracked KPI metrics and portfolio custom fields. Scopes every other query and is called automatically.

Fund performance

NAV, net IRR, DPI, TVPI, MOIC, commitments, and called capital. Latest snapshot, point-in-time as of any date, or per-period history for trend and QoQ analysis.

Capital activity & balances

Capital calls and distributions by fund, investor, or date range. Unpaid capital calls by investor, with amount owed and days overdue. Live per-investor capital account balances, carried interest, and total NAV.

Portfolio — browse & returns

Search and filter companies by name, industry, fund, round type, funding-round date, or your own custom fields. Add gross IRR and MOIC per company, the dated cash flows behind them, or pooled returns grouped by a field such as lead partner.

Portfolio — company detail

A full company profile in one call: investment history by fund and tranche, gross IRR, funding rounds with MOIC and deal terms, ownership, co-investors, and your firm's custom fields.

Investors — directory & leaderboard

Browse, search, or rank every LP and GP by commitment, called, contributed, distributed, and DPI, with optional contact emails. Or rank one fund's investors by NAV, TVPI, and net IRR as of any date.

Investor — profile

One investor's full profile: per-fund commitments, called, contributed, and distributed, plus contacts, group memberships, and active status.

Portfolio KPIs

Latest, historical, or point-in-time values for every metric your firm tracks: ARR, MRR, burn, runway, cash balance, headcount, and your own custom metrics. Time series and trailing sums such as T12 EBITDA. Each value is labeled a company submission or an AI-extracted figure.

KPI collection status

Which companies have or haven't submitted each KPI request, by reporting period, as firm-wide counts or company by company.

Income statement

Actual booked revenue, operating expenses, and gains or losses by account, period by period, with subtotals and net income. Monthly, quarterly, or annual, for a fund or for a management company's own books.

Chart of accounts

The enabled chart for any vehicle: account codes, names, accounting types, and financial statement labels.

Management fees

Fee schedules and billed economics per fund or SPV: annual rate, fee basis, gross fees, waivers, offsets, net fees, amount paid, and outstanding balance. Available as cumulative totals or as a quarter-by-quarter series with running totals.

We're actively expanding coverage. Income statements, chart of accounts, management fee detail, and unpaid capital call tracking are the latest additions.

Not yet reachable: documents and Drive files (K-1s, audited financials, capital call notices, PCAPs), balance sheet and journal-line detail, waterfall modeling, email, bill pay, and QA workflows.

If there's data you need that the AI can't reach yet, email support@hanoverpark.com.

Tips for Best Results

Be specific about the fund Say "Fund III" or "Growth Fund II" rather than "the fund." Specificity helps route to the right data on the first try.

Ask for comparisons The AI can query across multiple funds in a single conversation. Try "Compare net IRR across all active funds" or "Fund II vs Fund III TVPI side by side."

Use time-based queries Most tools accept an as-of date. Ask "What was the NAV as of 12/31/2024?" for a point-in-time snapshot, or "Show me quarterly net IRR for Fund III since inception" for a full series.

Chain questions naturally Start broad ("performance summary for Fund III") and drill in ("now show me the top holdings by MOIC" or "what did Acme Capital's capital account look like?").

Remember it's read-only The MCP server cannot create, update, or delete anything. If you need to make changes, use the Hanover Park web application.

FAQ

Does the AI store my fund data?

No. The MCP server returns data in the context of your conversation. Data retention depends on the AI client you're using (Claude, ChatGPT, etc.) and its own privacy policies. Hanover Park does not cache or store query results on the MCP server itself.

Can LPs connect directly?

Not currently. Only firm admins and members can authorize MCP connections.

Which AI clients are supported?

Any client implementing the MCP specification: OpenAI, Anthropic (claude.ai, Desktop, Code), Cursor, Codex CLI, Windsurf, VS Code, and many others.

Is there a cost for MCP access?

MCP access is included in your Hanover Park plan at no additional charge.

Can I restrict which tools are available?

Not currently. All read-only tools are available to any authorized user, provided they have access to the underlying data.

What happens if my Hanover Park permissions change?

The MCP server re-validates permissions on every request. If your role is downgraded or your account is deactivated, access is revoked immediately — even if you have an active token.
